Healthy Living Menu Launched!
Tue 30th Sep 08 - 11:14

In today's modern climate of constant news reports on the health of the nation and government policies promoting healthy living, a national restaurant brand is leading the market and have launched a menu that shows exactly what calories, fat, carbohydrates and salt is in the food they are serving. GUSTO Restaurant and Bar has launched a Healthy Living menu that has been devised by Chef Director John Branagan.

In partnership with nutritional biochemist Jeannette Jackson BSc (hons) and in association with the Addidas Wellness Clinics the menu aims to belie the myth that ‘if it's good for you it can't be interesting'. Devising the content of the menu has been a long process as each dish has been categorized to show the healthy characteristics it contains.

The healthy characteristics are coded A-G, A shows dishes that are good for an Active Healthy Heart, B is for food that Boosts the Immune System, C is food that is rich in Calcium, D represents Detoxifying foods, E shows Energy Boosting dishes, F shows the low carbohydrate options and G dishes are low in calories. An example from the menu is the Beef Carpaccio that is coded E F G showing that the dish has energy boosting properties as it is high in B vitamins and vital minerals, it is low in carbohydrates and low in calories.

Tim Bacon, Managing Director of Living Ventures commented; "We have invested a lot in developing this menu, all with our guests in mind. We want our diners to be relaxed about eating in our restaurants and have a full understanding of what they are eating. Knowing that we only use the freshest of ingredients in all our menus we wanted to assure our customers that they can eat out and maintain a healthy balanced diet."

GUSTO believe there's no such thing as food that is good or bad for you - moderation and balance is the key. The Healthy Living menu aims to emphasise that food should be enjoyed and it is possible to eat delicious, tasty food that's healthy too. (click here to see a copy of the menu).

George Osborne, Shadow Chancellor for the conservative party said:

"You don't necessarily want to be bombarded with things saying how fattening things are on a night out, but having a separate menu for those who want to look at it is a good idea." He said the menu was good for people like him who were not experts on healthy food. "There were certain things that I thought would be really fattening that weren't," he said. The menu could also help diabetics who have to watch what they eat.
